2009 Highlights -- Delaware Child Photographer

Can you believe 2009 is almost over?! I can't. And I also can't believe how hard it's going to be to narrow down the 20 or so pictures for the picture-of-the-year contest! I started grabbing at some of my favorites, and ended up with over 200. Hmm ... that won't work. But, one thing that does say to me is that 2009 was super fabulous! My clients are some of the loveliest people around and I'm so happy to have met all these wonderful people. And I'm even happier that I get to help them document these very special moments in their lives.

To celebrate the close of another year, here are just a few of my favorite shots from this year ... along with my absolute favorite song from the year, too. Like I said, my original number of favorites was over 200 ... but I narrowed it down a bit for this little video. And then I'll have to narrow it down even more for the contest. WHICH, by the way, will be posted on my brand new blog, which will be debuting next week. This is the last post I'm going to be making on this blog -- well, except for the one that announces the new blog ; )

So, thanks again to all my lovely clients. You helped to make 2009 a veeeery beautiful year ...

Longwood Thursday! -- Delaware Child Photographer

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! It's kind of nice to see the snow GONE. White snow is pretty ... but that black, ugly snow was getting old. Although, I hear a new storm may be coming through this week! Maybe we'll have another school's-out-savings day. We'll see : )

One thing we definitely do have is an upcoming Longwood Thursday. If you're interested in having pictures taken at Longwood Gardens this winter, here's your chance to save 20% off your session fee while having a fabulous time at a beautiful place. And speaking of Longwood, we spent looooots of time there last week working on some clothing shoots. A special thanks again to all the Moms and kiddies who braved the snow and ice to come out and work with me! I won't be able to share the pictures here on the blog for a few months yet. But, here's one of our models with his post-session treat : )

And little sis' who wasn't in our shoot this time around ... but had a blast playing in the water with her Nana! (note the wet bangs ;))

Lots of fun things are scheduled for January. I'll be holding the 2009 picture of the year contest during the first week of January. I"ll also announce the winner of the "celebrating two years" contest. If you haven't already entered ... hurry! Only a few days remain before the deadline of December 31!

Also, I'll be posting the boys "buy an outfit, get a session" outfit sometime in January. I know I said I'd do it in December ... but the time has just gotten away from me. So, stay tuned!!

January will also mark the debut of my brand spankin' new blog! It's veeeery purty! But more importantly, it's jam-packed with information for my clients. Including the new 2010 pricing ... which people have been loooooving! It also contains the 2010 picture party information, which people have been patiently waiting to see.

On the Cover -- Delaware Commercial Photographer

This morning I'm going to meet up with a little cutie that I photographed a few months back when she was just an itty bitty little newborn. We worked in some of the most fabulously gorgeous light. EVER. It warms my heart to see her with her beautiful Mommy on the cover of Pathways Magazine this month. Most newborn sessions take place indoors ... but there was something really special about doing this shoot outside. It was, well, peaceful.

What a beautiful day! The snow is just glistening today! If today were a school day, it would definitely be cancelled! So, that means 1/2 off sessions are officially open today! A full session today will be $100 instead of $200. (Please keep in mind that there is still a $250 minimum print order in addition to the session fee.) Sessions can be held indoors and/or outdoors. It's THE perfect day for adorable pictures of kiddies bundled up, snowmen, and family snowball fights. I'm happy to come to you (if possible). By the way, snow days are AMAZING for glamour shoots : )

A Winter Day -- Delaware Child Photographer

Whoa. That's a lot of snow! There's a big pile of snow perched upon the table on my back patio and I keep watching as it grows ... and grows ... and grows. I hear it might even be 20 inches! For those of you who don't live in this area, let me just say this: That's a lot of snow for Delaware! I hope that everyone is having wonderful day filled with snowmen and hot cocoa. Personally, I've only gone outside once today and that was to clear a little path for my poor little Bella to take her walk. She was NOT a happy camper.

Anyway, thank you so much to everyone for answering my latest casting call. I received soooooo many beautiful pictures of children whose parents were interested in this particular shoot. I have filled all of the spots except for one ... I still need a baby boy aged 6-8 months (who can sit on his own). The shoot will take place Wednesday at a soon to be disclosed (indoor) area. Not sure where yet ... but it will be somewhere local. If you're interested, please contact me asap!

And finally ... here's our retake. We had a MUCH better time this time around : ) Hey, we're all entitled to a bad day! Maliya is wearing a lovely CourtneyCourtney dress, which I absolutely LOVE. This dress is so cute (and comfy).

Casting Call -- Finally!!

So, the clothes are finally here : ) Here's what I need:

Boys 3T - three different boys

Girls 3T - two different girls

The sizes listed above will be shot at Longwood Gardens on Monday and Tuesday. I will be scheduling them in the mornings and early afternoon. If you are interested in having your child model, please contact me asap. If I haven't worked with your child in the last month, please send me a recent photograph of him or her.

Compensation: You will receive a complimentary guest pass to Longwood good for the full day and night (come back to see the lights at night!), the opportunity to purchase prints from the session at super low prices (starting at just $1) and $100 in modeling money (good for print purchase for a future personal or family session).

Hey ... where did our warm weather go?! Brr ... so, while I'm shivering here, let me do four quick updates.

1. Remember that lovely little "buy me some UGG Rockstars (size 9), get a session and print package worth $600" deal? Weeeeell ... if you were bummed because you missed the green pair on eBay ... you might want to check again today : ) Hint, hint, hint. If you don't know what on earth I'm talking about but would looooove to save big $$$ on a session and prints, check the details here. Oh, and to all of you who are like ... can't you squeeze into a 5 or 6 (apparently there are a lot of these still around in smaller sizes), the answer is, um, NO! Sorry! Nice try, though. UPDATE: THE PURPLE UGGS HAVE BEEN PURCHASED! IF YOU WANT IN ON THIS DEAL, BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE BLACK AND BEIGE PAIR! THE SAME OFFER APPLIES FOR THEM, TOO!

2. Casting call. Sigh. Sooo, this is turning into the longest, most drawn out casting call ever! My apologies for that. Buut, I'm told the clothes really won't arrive until Thursday morning ... sooooo, stay tuned. More than likely the sessions will need to take place next week. But, I"ll let you know as soon as I know.

3. Don't forget about the photo contest I have going on right now! All you have to do is send me a picture of someone (yourself, husband, child, whoever) and somehow incorporate the concept of "two" in the photo. The person with the most creative entry will receive a free session and coffee table book with all of their images! Details here ...

Casting Call Update

I know many people are on pins and needles waiting for more casting call details! So, I'll give you an update. I still haven't received the clothes yet because the designer had some last minute changes to make on some of the pieces. I should have them tomorrow ... so that means I'll post the casting call information sometime tomorrow afternoon or evening. The sessions will mainly be on Thursday ... I THINK. But hopefully I'll have more details tomorrow ... so stay tuned!

Meanwhile, here are a few more from Kristin's maternity session that I never blogged. What a cute, tiny, itty-bitty belly!!!

It was a faaaabulous session, and I have so many more gorgeous pictures. Tons! I'll share some more later. I have some other exciting things to share coming up in the next few weeks ... including (yay!) ... my brand new blog. I've been working hard on it for some time now, and I've only come close to breaking the whole entire Internet once or twice. So, if all of the sudden the Internet is just gone ... sorry. It's my fault.

I met Miss Asia at her Aunt Janet's family picture session a few weeks back. She was wearing the cutest little outfit. I mentioned to her Mom how much I loved her little style and asked her if she had picked out the outfit for Asia. She rolled her eyes jokingly and said, "Oh, that's our Asia! She dresses herself!" And not only does she do a good job of dressing herself, but she's also as cute as can be in pictures, too. So, when I got some really funky and fun pieces in from ZozoBugBaby and NuxieMade, I knew Asia was our girl. She helped pick the right jeans, shoes, and purses for each outfit. Check out how cute she is ...

I'm seriously in love with this outfit. It's too precious. This is one of my favorite Zozo outfits, and I think the hair piece is just about the coolest thing ever.

I got leaved ...

Now, this next little outfit is so much fun I can hardly stand it. The jacket is just too much. But in a good way, of course. You just HAVE to do ballet when you wear it. HAVE to.

Ok, so I'm going to admit to being a big goof. Soooo, Melissa sent me these gorgeous NuxieMade hair goodies to go with the outfits. We had so much fun with them. You'll notice that in some pictures the headband only has one flower, and in some, it has two. Weeell, I think I was supposed to actually use the loose flower as a separate hair clip. Duh. Instead, we accessorized with it on her belt loop and on the headband. Everything but the right way! Sorry, Melissa! I'll send you some new pictures from a future shoot!

And I got leaved again ...

Thanks Miss Asia! (and big sis'!) It was so much fun working with you girls.

It's been nearly three years that I've been photographing Miss Maliya. She's turned into quite the little model! Almost every time I speak with a designer, he or she asks the same thing, "Um, is that little curly haired girl available?!" We've had our share of two-year-old meltdowns and sugar highs. But, thanks to her Mom's hard work and diligent efforts, we always get the cutest pictures of her. The other day, however, we broke our perfect streak of success. We dressed her up in the cutest little CourtneyCourtney dress you ever did see. We tried all our regular tricks (boom boom pow, itsy bitsy spider, and candy.) Nothing. She had absolutely no interest in looking at me or my silly camera. Finally, she got tired of our begging and looked over at me once. I guess her look says it all ; ) ...

I can take a hint! I have to say, though, even her "get out of my face!" look is kinda cute!

The Happiest Baby -- Delaware Baby Photographer

One of the things I love the most about my job is well ... you ... my clients. I've joked before that my Web site must have a repellent on it that just automatically sends away non-cool people. Because, seriously, I work with THE coolest people. And after a session, we kind of feel like old friends, which is something that I just love. When an individual begins to book regular sessions, I love it because the dynamic of our sessions become so wonderfully relaxed, which makes all the difference in the world when it comes to capturing natural expressions. And when individuals hire me for my first-year baby plans, I reeeeally LOVE it because I know we're going to capture something veeery special. And because I'm going to gain new friends : )

Windy Day -- Delaware Wedding Photography

We listed all of our favorite warm things. Sunny beaches. Hot chocolate. Bubble baths. And we even did jumping jacks. (Alright, she did ... not me. I watched. But, it did make me feel warmer.) Yesterday was a cooold and rainy day. The kind of day that usually forces me to reschedule an outdoor shoot. Buuut, this particular clothing shoot couldn't be rescheduled, so we had to make it work. We huddled under umbrellas and overhangs. The girls were cold ... but they hardly complained at all. I probably complained more. We shot for nearly two hours. In kid time that's like 20 hours! So, a major thanks to Miss Hannah, Ava, and Sarah. You girls are soooo ready for America's Next Top Model. If yesterday were a mission, you sooooo would have won! After the session, I climbed back into my car with my soggy UGGS, wet skirt, and frizzy hair. I smiled ... because despite the difficult conditions, I love what I do. I smiled because I knew that today, December 1, would mark the second year anniversary of my business. Two years ago today was my last day at my old job. It's hard to believe it's been two years already. So, like the announcement above states, I'll be celebrating with a big fat contest announcement on Thursday. And yes ... it will have something to do with the number two ; )

And finally, let's move on to some gorgeous pictures of gorgeous people. I met up with Jessica and Marc this past Saturday for their engagement session. After already having to reschedule once before due to rain, we finally ended up with a gorgeous day. No leaves. But gorgeous anyway. It was windy, though. Veeery windy. And since we were pretty high up, the wind was really hitting us. The warm sun helped, though and also made for some lovely shots. See ...

I do love a little wind in the hair, though. It sure does make for a nice picture.

These two were just so easy to work with. Both of them were at ease in front of the camera, which made my job as easy as slice and bake cookies.

Something tells me that if these two ever decide to have children, they will have blue eyes! ...

I know I'm stating the obvious here, but Marc, you're marrying a super model!!!

Friday and Saturday were wiiiiiiindy. But I'm a major fan of blowing hair/kissing pictures ... so I was happy : )

She's back home ... safe and sound. I was worried all day. I think it was the "in case of sudden heart failure" paper you have to sign when you drop them off for surgery that freaked me out. But she's back home. And finally, after about two hours of whimpering, she's all settled in. Phew.

Miss Emma was awwwwwfully glad I brought some donuts for her big sis' commercial PJ shoot.

I can't really show you the PJs yet, but here's Kayla enjoying donut number one ; )

And speaking of cute little sisters ... here's little Miss Ava who was such a doll the other day while I was working with her big sister on the same PJ shoot. She didn't complain once that she wasn't the center of attention. So, while her Mom and sister were changing, I shot a few pictures of her. She seemed relieved to finally have the camera on her ...

And today, despite the dreary weather, I had such a fabulous Beautiful You session. FABULOUS. My new friend (who shall remain nameless since this session and the calendar that will feature her lovely images are a gift for her hubby) was so much fun. It rained most of the session ... but she rocked it out anyway. She climbed through tiny holes and trekked through mud - and never complained once. Trya would have been proud ; )

Tomorrow I'll be sitting on pins and needles since my little Bella is having a little procedure. Thankfully, she and one of the vet techs are bffs, so I'm assured she will have non-stop attention (and kisses). I promised her that when she comes home we'll watch a new BBC movie my Mom just lent me. It's six hours long. Bella is veeery happy about that.

The Dog Drank My Coffee -- Delaware Child Photographer

Yes, the dog did drink my coffee (good thing it was decaf!), but that's ok ... it was still an awesome picture party! Monica told me in advance that her aunt's house is pretty fabulous ... but when I pulled into the long driveway, I couldn't help but gasp. A pond! Tall grasses and wheat! Trees that still have leaves! A giant trampoline! And ... old beat up cars!! We shot until the sun was completely gone ... it was that good. A special thanks to all the guests for attending. I had a blast. I hope you enjoy your little sneak peek below ; )

Ok, now, these girls were a hoot! In a few years, you're going to see them on an episode of American Idol or something like it.

Told you the cars ROCKED!

Monica asked me if it was ok that she brought along her own props. The answer, of course, was ... OF COURSE! I love when people personalize their sessions. And she did a fabulous job.

See how the sun is nearly down in the picture above? This next family juuuuuust made it. Their poor Mom arrived on time, only to find out that they'd forgotten to bring her daughter's shoes. She had been asleep when they left the house, so they didn't realize she was shoeless until they arrived at the picture party. So, they ran out to Kohl's and got back just in time (with some new red sparkle shoes!) to get the last bit of light.

I HEART, HEART, HEART this next one. And I really can't take any credit for it. She decided to lie down all on her own. She must have been tired out from all that shopping!

And last but not least ... we ended things with the cousins on the trampoline. I'm pretty amazed that this turned out as well as it did. This was after sunset ... so it was preeeetty dark out. Because they were sitting still, I could slow down my shutter speed a bit ... but since I was standing above them balancing on a trampoline, I figured my movement would wreck things. I was super happy to find out when I uploaded them that they did, in fact, come out ok ...

Thanks again, Monica : ) I'll let you know when your full gallery of images is ready.

Now, in case you're wondering if I'm still doing picture parties (since the info on my main Web site says I'm not), the answer is no ... and yes. No ... I'm not scheduling anymore at this moment. But, yes, I will be scheduling them again in the near future. I'm in the middle of making some picture party changes ... and then I'll post the 2010 information here on the blog. So, stay tuned!

Old New Castle Extravaganza -- Delaware Family Photographer

I hope you're curled up somewhere with a blanket and a warm beverage to sip : ) It's so chilly and wet out there. But last week, we actually had some dry days ... and the sun even (gasp!) came out. On one such day, I met up with Janet and her girls for a huuuuuge extravaganza of pictures. We braved the chill along the Delaware River in Old New Castle and I have soooo many pictures to share that I better just shut my mouth and begin ...

Let's start with these adorable sisters. They soooo know how to pose! ...

Awesome -- Delaware Photographer

Today I found this article on Dr. Mercola's site. It was originally taken from The Washington Post. It's a good lesson for us all. We're missing so much when we forget to slow down and enjoy what's right in front of us.

On a cold January morning in a Washington, DC Metro Station, a man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time about two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After three minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

Four minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. After 6 minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. After ten minutes, a 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

In the end, only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money, but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. When he finished playing, no one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

The violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell had sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

The performance was organized as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and people's priorities. In a common place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do you perceive beauty? Do you stop to appreciate it? Do you recognize talent in an unexpected context?

If you do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, how many other things might you be missing?

Happy Anniversary, Phil & Audrey! - Delaware Photographer

I've known Phil for soooooo long. So long. Like, heading-towards-two-decades long. Ten years ago, he married someone I didn't know at all ... but she sure seemed nice. And as it turns out, she's pretty sneaky, too. A few months back, she contacted me to see if we could arrange a secret shoot so that she could surprise Phil with a calendar on their anniversary. We had so much fun on our shoot ... and the pictures, I must say, turned out AMAZING! He thought she was out shopping the whole time ; ) That was surprise one. Surprise two was a session for the the two of them. So, as they headed out for an anniversary weekend in Lancaster last Friday, Audrey first stopped in at Longwood Gardens. Phil didn't know why, though. He looked a little perplexed when I pulled up. But then she explained that I was there for a shoot of the two of them : ) We didn't even go into Longwood, since the trees all around the entrance were insanely gorgeous. See ...

Later on during their weekend, Audrey gave Phil his gift ... the calendar and a bunch of prints from her session. Apparently he had no idea just how sneaky his wife can be!!! Here's just a few from Audrey's retro glamour session. How ridiculously gorgeous is she?!

I was given veeeeery strict instructions NOT to post any shots from the Amaro's session unless it contained ONLY children. NO adults. NONE! I totally understand ... and have no shame in admitting that I did the very same thing to Amie when she took my pictures. I said, "No posting until I 'clear' them first!" Anyway, when I came across this particular shot, I simply fell in love. I think it's such a fun family picture. Sooo, I begged, and was granted permission to post this one picture. And I better hurry up and do it before she changes her mind! ; )

Aren't they good actors? The only thing in the ring was a little girl riding her pony. And I'm pretty sure we scared them off!

Windy Day Fun -- Delaware Family Photographer

They contacted me because they were looking for something a little different than just a regular studio portrait. And so ... out we went in search of fun spots on a blustery Friday. And I do mean BLUSTERY!! Good thing these guys are from up North (Massachusetts, to be exact) because they managed to still look happy and cute despite the strong gusts of icy wind. Look how cute their outfits are next to the Starbucks on Main Street ...

This little guy is such a cutie pie ...

Slowly but surely, noses became red, and hands became frozen, so off we went in search of some warmth. We found it in the library. These little guys love to read ... especially Curious George books.

Once we warmed up, it was back out to a more rural setting.

And then suddenly ... a fight broke out! Of course, what you can't see here is Mom and Dad's hats. Mom's a Sox fan ... and Dad is all about the Yankees. Gulp. Looks like Mom has the support of her boys, though.

And really, what's a trip to a nice peaceful park without a little walk in a corn field?

Looks like the little guy was hungry! ...

Thanks, guys! It was so much fun working with you! I would say that I hope you've warmed up ... but you're back up North now, so I guess that isn't possible for another couple of months!

Tra La La Cuteness -- Child Commercial Photography

What a beeeeautiful day we had today. So, so gorgeous. I'm actually about to just collapse into bed after a looong weekend, but first, here's some more Tra La La cuteness. I don't usually get to share the pictures with you all right after I shoot them ... because I'm often shooting a few seasons ahead. But in this case, all of these adorable clothes are currently on sale, so I can share away! ...

How adorable is Miss Maliya?! She was one happy little kid in a candy store. Literally.

An outfit change ... and then we headed out to burn off all the sugar!

Look at these baby blues! This little cutie was a real trooper. She and her lovely twin sister were each supposed to model an outfit ... but as it turns out, sis had the grumps, so she had to take care of business all by herself.

I absolutely LOVE this outfit! ...

And last but not least, a little acoustic set with Miss Hannah. She really got into Miley's "The Climb."

I'm just so in love with these last two ...

Happy Announcement -- Delaware Commercial Photographer

It was damp ... gray ... and the lovely smell of horse poop lingered in the air. (How's that for an opening sentence?!) Sarah tirelessly sang Hannah Montana, jumped up and down like crazy to illicit laughter, and helped turn our horse into the perfect model. But it was somewhere in the middle of a rendition of Miley's "Hoe Down" that I made a decision: all modeling sessions will now result in reeeeeally cheap prints for the models. In the past, I've taken 30% off the print prices for all the images that result from a modeling session. But starting, well, now, the pricing will be as follows ...

It's just my way of saying "thank you!" to all the fabulous Moms who work so hard to help me make beautiful images on these sessions. Seriously ... they work HARD. Carousel Park -- Delaware Child Photographer

She was worried about the leaves. Or, lack of leaves, really. But, as it turns out, we had gooooorgeous leaves last Friday over at Carousel Park. Absolutely gorgeous. I'm so, so glad that Theresa chose this spot for her family's pictures! These kids just crack me up.

Finally ... Some Sun! -- Delaware Child Photographer

Heeeello sunshine! Man, it feels so good outside! It just makes me want to smile. And it makes other people happy, too. Like the lovely ticket taker who works in the parking lot behind Panera on Main Street. I pulled up this morning (after a veeeery cute session on Main Street) to pay, and she flashed a big grin, winked, opened the gate, and said, "Get out of my parking lot!" I put my money away and pulled out with an even bigger smile. Not because I saved $2.00, but because of her big grin. It's nice to find nice people. So, yay for her! (Side note: Boo to the army guys in The Cereal Bowl. Apparently they're NOT so tough after all, since they couldn't handle two minutes of a crying baby. BOOOO!)

Anyway, my blog has been neglected, and so have my previews. So, here are a few previews to the real previews.

The Monroes -- Delaware Child Photographer

I have a terrible memory. I mean ... it's bad. Just the other day, I found myself bopping along in the car with the windows open and suddenly, I realized that I couldn't remember where I was going. No lie. I racked my brain, but it wasn't until I got all the way home that I was like, oh. The bank. So, anyway, it's hardly a surprise that I aaaaaalways forget to send my friends a card on their anniversaries. ALWAYS. It's not that I forget that's it their wedding month (ok, the exact day ... yah, I do forget), it's just that everytime I think that I should get them a card ... I then turn around forget.

Tanna and Talbert haven't received a card from me the entire time they've been married (well, unless I'm forgetting about a time when I actually remembered to send one. And that's very possible.) But, in honor of the BIG 10 ... here's a little something that I whipped up during part two of their family session. I don't really have the software needed to do something like this justice, but that's ok, this works. Please pardon the camera shake you'll notice throughout. Every time Maliya made me laugh I couldn't help but shake a little ; )

Is It the Water? -- Delaware Baby Photographer

I deal with lots of clothing designers that are not based in the tri-state area and they always tell me the same thing: Man! Delaware has the cutest kids ever! Of course, I always let them know that I work with kids from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland, too ... but that they're right! The kids here are just gorgeous. Is it something in the water? Well, whatever it is, my session on Sunday featured one such adorable little one. Look at this little face : ) ...

We worked soooo hard to try and get smiles ... but she wasn't having it. Instead, she just gave me all kinds of adorable little baby pouts and sweet little expressions.

We shot these first few at Milburn's Orchards ... but man! It was windy, chilly, and CROWDED.

So, from Milburn's we moved over to Fairhill, where we (accidentally) found a nice little area that was down low enough to be protected from the wind.

We were shooting right smack dab in the middle of the day ... which can be a really tough time for light. But this area was amazing! The light was so soft and gorgeous.

Many thanks to our fabulous peanut gallery for producing genuine laughter. Love it ...

Future Baby Gap model. For sure! ...

Nothing feels as good as the sun on your bare skin ... especially when you've been covered up for a little while. Random warm days are the best!

Sarah and Amarin's Wedding -- Delaware Wedding Photographer

Yes, it's possible. You can plan an amazingly beautiful wedding in less than 10 days. Sarah and Amarin did it. And I'm so thankful that they chose me to document their lovely ceremony. This wedding was a photographer's dream ... complete with gorgeous light, a lovely location, a fabulous couple, and two insanely cute kids. INSANELY cute.

I loved everything that everyone in this family was wearing. It was just perfect!

Sarah and Amarin checked all around to find THE spot for their intimate ceremony, and in the end, this swirl won out. They were thinking about Gibraltar or Valley Garden ... but I'm so glad the swirl won out in the end ; )

The light was extraordinary. Just extraordinary.

I love the next set. Sarah, you are so gorgeous!

It was pretty amazing that the kids were able to hold up the entire time. There was a little fussing about shoes and some whining for Burger King. But in the end they had to settle for dinner at Mendenhall Inn instead ; )

Hodge Podge -- Delaware Child Photographer

As I sat on the bench today, gazing up at the yellow trees, I couldn't help but smile. I was early and had some time to kill, so I decided to people watch. It's been veeery busy these last few weeks, so those 15 minutes were particularly glorious. I saw people of all shapes and sizes. But the couple I enjoyed watching the most was an elderly woman and her son. She sat wearily on the bench opposite of mine as he went to get the car. Then he helped her scoot into the front seat, gently lifted her feet into the car, and then kindly helped her with her seat belt. And she simply smiled the entire time. It was very sweet.

And then I had a wonderful treat. A Wednesday wedding! (On an AMAZINGLY gorgeous fall day, none the less!) I'll have a full preview from the lovely day soon. Meanwhile, here's a little taste of what has been keeping me so busy ...

Sunset -- Delaware Photographer

Do you remember it? Saturday the 10th. About 6:44. It was amazing.

I was crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge, ~~putting Miley to shame with a stunning rendition of Party in the USA~~ listening to very cool, grown-up music, and I couldn't help but gasp. Let's face it ... the shores of the Delaware River aren't so pretty. It's factory city on both sides. But even that couldn't wreck the view. So, as I waited at the toll booth, I pulled out my camera and then shot the above picture. It came out pretty well considering I didn't even check the settings before I shot it. It was one of those sunsets that just humbles you, and helps you put things back into perspective. Now that the sun is back, maybe we'll get a repeat this week. Maybe even when I'm on a photo shoot. That suuuuure would make me a very happy girl : )

Smokey Cinnamon -- Commercial Child Photographer

It's cold. It's wet. It's gloomy. And it was all starting to get to me until I slid out of my car and smelled it. There I was mailing a letter at the Elkton post office (a tiny little trailer nestled away amidst dripping yellow foliage) and the scent stopped me in my tracks and made me smile. Cold rain dripped on my face as I stood there breathing in the earthy combination of burning wood and cinnamon. I'm not sure from where the cinnamon smell was coming, but boy. It smelled good. And suddenly I felt happy again. I guess it really is the little things.

10 Years -- New Jersey Family Photographer

(Whew ... two posts in one day!)

It was my turn to say something ... so I took the mic and this is what I said: "My name is Kate and I can't wait to see what this baby looks like!" Well, something to that effect, anyway. We were waiting for Tanna and Talbert to arrive for their surprise baby shower and someone was filming as guests took their turns saying to the audience something for the new parents to later watch. So, I said what was on my mind. I really was curious, since I couldn't imagine any two people who were physically more different.

Well ... she arrived. And boy. She sure is a cutie. You've seen her maaaaany times on this blog modeling clothes and just rockin' it Maliya style. It's her Mommy and Daddy's 10th anniversary, and Mom wanted family pictures. This is just part one of, well, I don't know. We'll see. There are so many cute pictures I just don't know how to choose. But, for now, here's just a few of my favorites ...

I'm so in love with these next few pictures. We were all headed into the bathroom for tub pictures (hmm ... there's something you don't say everyday!), and I gasped as I saw Maliya standing near her parents' legs. LOVE it!

Longwood Session -- Pennsylvania Family Photography

A while back, my good friend Debbie popped by my house and asked if I would like to donate a session to be auctioned off as part of a family fun basket she was putting together for a Juvenile Diabetes fund raiser. I was very happy to do so. And the winner of the basket? Julie and her family of little monkeys. If you arrive at Longwood and are met with a giant sign that says, "DO NOT CLIMB TREES!", I'm sorry. It's my fault. These guys just looked so cute up in the trees! This little one especially is quite the climber ...

You HAVE to do a shot like this in the fall. HAVE to.

I just love this next one of their family. Tongue and all.

We tried to take a nice family picture on this tree, but someone (not saying who, though) just didn't want to cooperate ...

It's a chilly, gray, grumpy day. I had a lovely session this morning in Gibraltar, and now I'm bundled up in front of my computer hard at work editing, which I'll be doing all week in an attempt to get caught up. I've just listened to one of my current favorite songs about 15 times, so I thought I'd share it with you all. I would have just pulled the official video off You Tube, but I must say, I don't like it. (No offense, Kenny.) So, I made my own little slideshow with recent images to go with it instead. So, if you're having a blue (or gray) day, this is for you : )

By the way, if you're NOT a fan of country music ... listen anyway. The lyrics are the best part. Plus, Dave Matthews takes over at the end. So, it's only half country ...

Clothes in the Past Lane -- Delaware Commercial Photographer

This was easy as pie. Gorgeous clothes. Lovely models. And some fabulous hair and makeup. Plus, since most of my commercial work is with children's clothing designers, I must say, grown-ups are so easy! I say, "look over there," and they do it. "Stand like a pencil." Done. "Jump like a ninja." No problem. And never once did I have to sing Hannah Montana. (Although, between you and me, I don't really mind that part of my job too much. Shhh.)

This shoot was fabulous because of many fabulous people:

Sandi and the gang at Clothes in Past Lane on Main Street in Newark picked out all the rockin' clothes. We had a nice mix of vintage and new clothes.

Gloss Salon (over by the Co-op on Main Street) hooked us up with some AWESOME hair and makeup. AWESOME! Thanks, guys!

And our models, of course, are just THE BEST. These girls climbed buildings, worked it in front of hot dog carts, were subjected to many a cat call and horn honk, and willingly tried out all my "out there" poses without so much as a single complaint. Thanks, girls!!!

I have so many amazing pictures from this shoot, but here are a few of my favorites ...

Be warned: I just may show up to anyone of my upcoming shoots with hair just like this. Because it's awesome.

See, I told you I made her jump like a Ninja. Which, by the way, is SUPER hard to do in heels, especially when your crazy photographer is also telling you to look serene and peaceful. I think she NAILED it.

I told her that she was going to have to stand there at that parking meter until a car honked. It took about 1/2 a second. Literally.

You girls ROCKED this session. Hope you like the preview : )

Kelly and Kevin -- Delaware Wedding Photographer

They met at a Coldplay concert. And the rest, as they say, is history. This past Sunday, Kevin and Kelly had a beautiful wedding at The Old Mill in Media. So many times throughout the day the emotion, the light, and the splendor of the day left me with goose bumps. I don't think the day could have been more perfect.

Many thanks to Danielle for recommending that we hang Kelly's gorgeous dress outside on one of the trees : ) ...

I happen to be in love with first looks and always recommend them to my brides. Not only does this allow for us to get beautiful pictures before the ceremony, but the moment is usually very special and emotional.

Oh, that light. And that veil!

The ceremony site was just lovely.

I had such a hard time focusing my camera since these two brought me to tears during the ceremony.

Not only was the light outside beautiful, but the light streaming into the banquet hall was just exquisite.

We almost lost the cake! She saved it, though : ) ...

And last, but not least, we ended the night with a few outdoor shots.

Kelly and Kevin, thank you so much for trusting me with your memories. Your wedding was absolutely beautiful. I hope you're having fun in Jamaica!!!

What a Cutie!! -- Delaware Child Photographer

I've always seen the signs ... and always wanted to go. But somehow, I just never got there. So, imagine my delight when recent contest winner, Lauren, asked if we could do her adorable daughter's session at Ramsey's Farm. What a fun place! If you've never had a chance to check it out, be sure to make your way there sometime this fall and enjoy some pumpkin picking and painting, hay rides, and ice cream. Not to mention the general loveliness of the area.

The first thing this little one wanted to do? Read. My kind of girl : )

And on a completely different note, I just found this song on YouTube and I thought I'd share. It makes me laugh, actually. I got started with my required language late in my college career ... because I was scared to take it. When I was in seventh grade, I took French for one marking period, after which the teacher told me that some people just aren't meant to learn a foreign language. Meaning ... me. But, I couldn't graduate from U of D without at least three semesters of a foreign language. I guess my Mom thought it would help if I did a study abroad course, and so I spent a full month in France. And I very quickly fell in love with the language. However, I had only taken French 101 before my trip, so I couldn't understand a word. If I had it to do over, I would wait until I had a few classes under my belt before heading off to France. Anyway, the reason for this bit of rambling is because today I did a shoot with the fabulous ladies from Clothes in the Past Lane and one of the girls just reminded me soooo much of one of my favorite francophone singers ... Lara Fabian. So, when I got home I just had to pull up some YouTube clips. This one I've attached below cracks me up because, clearly, she is singing in Italian. I, however, bought her CD when I was in France and proceeded to spend most of the trip walking around with my little portable CD player listening to it. I felt all French listening to the "French" song. Sigh. It wasn't until a little while later that I was like, hey, wait a minute. That's not French! Oye. Hmm ... maybe my seventh grade teacher had a point! But that's ok ... it's still a beautiful song. Too bad more American singers don't actually, well, sing.

Crispy leaves + irregularly updated blog = FALL! That's right. The fall picture season is in full swing and I've been a very busy bee. I'm editing pictures like crazy this week and also have some really awesome shoots planned for this week ... so stay tuned : )

Meanwhile, I'm ver happy to report that Miss Maliya was featured on the designer jots blog today! Her picture will also be featured at an upcoming fabric convention. Julie, the designer over at Zozo Baby Bug designed this awesome little dress just for her ... and even gave it a cool name: The Maliya Dress. Aw : )

Crazy Ideas -- Delaware Photographer

It was a constant source of friction at my old job as a marketing writer/designer. I could neeeever just design something simple and quick. No. It always had to be something creative and different (read: complicated). And I knew it bugged certain people that I always had to push the envelope a bit ... but that's just me. I don't like things to be plain and boring. I never have. And once I get a crazy idea in my head for a print design, a photo shoot, or the remodeling of a room in my house ... there's no rest in my head until I've accomplished it. It nags at me, begging to be attempted. Sometimes the crazy ideas are effective. And sometimes they flop. Big time. And while the flops can be disappointing, I know they are leading me towards something that will, eventually, be successful.

As I was cleaning out my over-stuffed hard drive this morning, I came across some crazy pictures that my Mom took of Bella and I waaaaay back in January. I don't think I ever blogged any of them ... probably because I think I look ... well crazy. I mean, really, why did I think purple leggings were a good idea?! I was just about to debut my Beautiful You web site and I wanted to have a picture of me for my bio page. And so I got a crazy idea in my head to do this whole pink/purple extravaganza. I mean, I could have just done a regular old b/w headshot. But, nooooo. I had to get all over the top. I never did use these pictures because I just don't like how I look in them (again, purple leggings?!). But when I came across the pictures this morning, they did make me smile. And yes, Bella IS trying desperately to escape from me, my crazy ideas, and my goofy purple leggings.

The moral of the story? Never be afraid to carry out your creative ideas. If you fail ... so what. At the very least you will have learned something in the process. Like the importance of NEVER wearing purple leggings if you are older than 10.

Zozo Monday -- Child Commercial Photographer

More than precious. That's how I would describe the models I worked with on Monday. I started the morning up in Trolley Square with Miss Hannah who absolutely rocked her session. It was my first time working with her and it was a delight. She modeled two Zozo outfits ... but I can only share one with you right now ; ) ...

I LOVE the mermaids on this little skirt!

How do you like her rockin' hat?! This fabulous creation is a NuxieMade hat. I'm a smitten kitten. The quality is so awesome.

Let me tell yah, if my head was so stinkin' huge (filled with knowledge, of course), I would so steal this little hat for myself!

You'll get to see the other cuter-than-CUTE outfit that Hannah modeled sometime next year. Everyone who walked by us on the street couldn't help but stop and smile when they saw how cute she looked! : )

Now, the entire time I was working with Hannah, I couldn't help but think, "Gee. She reminds me so much of Maliya!" So, it was like deja vu when I met up with Tanna and Maliya in New Castle later that same afternoon. Check out this INSANELY adorable little number that Julie from Zozo Baby Bug designed for an upcoming fabric show.

Ok, so you may notice that Maliya looks a little subdued in these pictures. Poor little cutie. She was just in the beginning stages of a cold, and the Benadryl definitely mellowed her out ; ) As it turns out, she also DOES not like laundromats (even if they match her outfit). And ... just like her mother ... she HATES wearing hats. So, we weren't able to really do this beautiful NuxieMade hat justice. I will, though! You'll be seeing more of this brown hat!

Here are the "normal" Maliya looks. But yesterday we had to work haaaard for them! I mean hard. Like songs-about-lip-gloss-butterflies-and laundromats hard.

The laundromat wasn't working out all that well so off we headed in the direction of my next stop. This dress has such an earthy vibe to it that I really wanted to do a kind of hippie look in a field. I had a field in mind that I hoped would still have some yellow weeds in it. On the way, though, we found something even better. Waaaay better!

Poor Maliya. As we set her down by the flowers, she looked up and said, "I'm so tired, Ma." So, we wrapped it up. I'm thinking that they had a sleepy ride home.

Trees, Light, and Sparkle Pants -- Delaware Photographer

Life can be preeeetty stressful sometimes. Too stressful. This past week, I just so happened to witness three different accidents in the exact same place. No lie. For some strange reason, I found myself waiting to turn off of Elkton Road onto Route 4 around 5:30 three times this week. And three times I watched as drivers coming from route 4 to turn onto Elkton Road ran right into the car ahead of them. THREE TIMES! I've decided to avoid that spot during rush hour from now on ... because apparently people aren't paying attention. Or maybe they're too stressed. I know I am sometimes. That's why I was so glad when my friend and fellow photographer Amie suggested we go out and shoot some pretty scenery. Now, I'm a people photographer. That's my thing. So landscapes have always been a challenge for me. I feel like something is missing from the picture ... like, uh, a person. But this was a good way for me to stretch myself as an artist and as it turns out, a great way to bring some inner calm in my life. So, at 6:47 a.m., I dragged myself out of bed, threw on my most comfy black cotton pants, and met Amie at the door.

If you're looking for some inner peace or a new place to take a stroll, definitely consider Fair Hill. It's so lovely there.

My nature shots tend to have a kind of romantic feel to them ...

It was funny, because at one point in the morning, Amie turned to me and said, "Um, do your pants have glitter all over them?" I looked down. Oh. My "black" cotton pants were actually my old sparkle palazzo pants that were cool back in the day. In my defense, though, they're still VERY comfortable TOday.

I decided to try and push myself and create some non "romantic" looking shots. I'm happy with the results : )

I think this one is my favorite of the day ...

As you can see from these images, early morning light is extraordinary. It's worth getting up early ... even if it hurts.

Lacy & Clinton -- Delaware Wedding Photographer

It's coming. In less than two hours from now, it will officially be my favorite season of the year. I love the crispy leaves. The cooler temperatures. And the light. Oh, how I love the late afternoon light in the fall. So, as I'm waiting for the clock to strike 5:30 and my favorite season to officially begin, I'll share with you some pictures from Lacy and Clint's lovely wedding on Saturday. They're in Florida ... but I know they're waiting!!!!

Lacy found this gorgeous necklace four years ago. It was perfect.

This wedding just so happened to feature two of THE cutest little flower girls.

Beautiful and happy ... a good combination : ) ...

I don't think Lacy was all that happy that I suggested this picture. But I think Mom and Dad will be happy to have this one.

And onto the ceremony. He looks pretty happy, doesn't he?

I absolutely LOVED that Clinton's grandfather was one of his groomsmen.

Another Cute Outfit -- Delaware Commercial Photographer

Hello, sun! It certainly is nice that you decided to come back to us! And it looks like we're supposed to get even more sun this weekend. We earned it : ) It's been so dreary and wet these last few days. However, if you DON'T want to get depressed, DON'T check next week's forecast on weather.com. Instead, just enjoy the sun this weekend!(They're never right anyway.)

And now ... onto more positive thinking and helpful tips from Jack Canfield. Because ... well ... I want to.

Just like yesterday's post, the following excerpt on rejection is from his book, "The Success Principles: How to Get From Here to There." He starts off with the following quote:

The girl doesn't, it seems to me, have a special perception or feeling which would lift that book above the "curiosity" level. - From the rejection slip for The Diary of Anne Frank

Here are some other famous rejections that he includes. If you have ever felt bad about someone turning down your work, not wanting to hire you, or telling you that you just "don't have what it takes," consider the following:

"When Alexander Graham Bell offered the rights to the telephone for $100,000 to Carl Orton, president of Western Union, Orton replied, 'What use would this company make of an electrical toy?

Angie Everhart, who started modeling at the age of 16, was once told by model agency owner Eileen Ford that she would never make it as a model. Why not? 'Redheads don't sell.' Ok, and finally ... pictures.

I've officially dubbed Miss Taryn the fastest baby in the East. She comes from a long line of runners, and she is absolute proof that it really is in the genes. When I saw her last month, she was a terror on all fours. And now ... she's up ... and she's fast! Cute, too.

This adorable CourtneyCourtney outfit is perfect for this little mover and shaker. It's comfy, cute, and in no way slows her down ; )

Poor Taryn was horribly scared when an ambulance rode by with a very loud siren. But she didn't care at all when a balloon burst right in her face. It nearly gave me a heart attack, though.

Taryn has a thing for keys. Hey, at least she doesn't lose them like some grown-ups ; )

I'm told that Taryn liked her outfit so much that her Mommy washed it for her and she wore it again today. That's why I love Courtney's stuff ... it's so comfy!

Cheery Things on A Dreary Day -- Delaware Commercial Photographer

Back when I was employed by a Wilmington-based company as a Designer/Writer, I ordered a book for my "professional development." I read the book, underlining and highlighting practically every word. Every point seemed so useful. No doubt you've heard of the series of books called "Chicken Soup for the Soul." Well, the author, Jack Canfield, has many books, including one entitled, "The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be." The other day, as I was cleaning out one of my closets, I came across a box with items I packed away from my desk when I left the company not quite two years ago. And there I found the book. So, I've started reading it again. But this time, instead of thinking about how the principles can make me a better employee for someone else, I'm using them to help make me a better self-employed individual. And from time to time, I'll share some of my favorite points here with you ... because, well, I want to. So, here's one principle I really like ...

Principle 4: Believe It's Possible

"Doctors in Texas ... assigned patients with sore, worn-out knees to one of three surgical procedures: scraping out the knee joint, washing out the joint, or doing nothing. During the 'nothing' operation, doctors anesthetized the patient, made three incisions in the knee as if to insert their surgical instruments, and then pretended to operate. Two years after surgery, patients who underwent the pretend surgery reported the same amount of relief from pain and swelling as those who had received the actual treatments. The brain expected the 'surgery' to improve the knee, and it did.

This is why it's so important to hold positive expectations in your mind. When you replace your old negative expectations with more positive ones—when you begin to believe that what you want is possible—your brain will actually take over the job of accomplishing that possibility for you. Better than that, your brain will actually expect to achieve that outcome."

That was one of the first points that really stood out to me. I plan on using that point both in my professional and personal life. For instance, I'm going to start believing that I'm a size 3. We'll see what happens.

And now on to the pictures! Yesterday I worked with Mr. Brian and his awesome mohawk. Can you tell that his Mommy is a hairdresser?! ; )

Brian is modeling a fabulous CourtneyCourtney number. I love all the colors and the funky style. Originally, I was going to do this shoot behind a grocery store where the walls are kind of gritty. I pictured him on a skateboard (which I bought ... and then, as you saw, used for a newborn!). But, the more I thought about it, the more I wasn't sure if it would be safe at the particular area I wanted to use ... especially since cars come flying in and out of the parking lot. At first I wasn't sure what to do or where to go. It was such a dreary day yesterday and I wanted the shoot to be fun and bright. Thankfully, about an hour before I met up with them, I got the idea of getting a ton of balloons to match the colors in the stripes. It definitely turned out cute!

This is his first time on a skateboard. And in true boy fashion, he wanted to just hop right on and go. Actually, the first thing he wanted to do was attach it to the back of the tricycle and tow it like his Daddy tows things. It was too cute!

These last two are definitely my favorites : )

Meet Evan.

Isn't he just too precious?! His parents were kind enough to answer my casting call the other day, and I'm so glad they did!

Now, as for why I offered this particular casting call ... I had an idea just absolutely stuck in my head and I just HAD to do it. It all started a week ago when I got this old skateboard for an upcoming clothing shoot. It was only $1 but I love how little it is. As I was driving home with the skateboard next to me, I just kept picturing something like this ...

So, I put out the casting call so I could do my crazy little idea. And then, of course, the rest of our shoot was just practice. Because practice definitely makes perfect.

Evan's Mom and Dad just had this gorgeous floor put in before his early arrival. I absolutely loved it and knew I had to have a picture of him on it. Plus, his little blanket matched ; )

I LOVE this next one of Amy and her little man.

If the cooler temps we have going on today haven't convinced you that fall is almost here, maybe this picture will. Yellow leaves!

This little guy was not big on being curled up. He prefers to stretch out.

I tried one more time to get the little guy to curl up for me ... but he was like, Uh, NO! And take your silly fabric back, too!

We worked hard for this last one!

And finally, the proof that the tree shot was totally safe. The sling was tied so tight that even I could have hopped in and it would have stayed put. But just to be sure, Daddy's hands stayed there the whole time : )

And speaking of the casting calls, I spent the afternoon with a lovely family who were the first to respond to the casting call for a newborn. Little Evan is about as sweet as can be. I'll put a full post up tomorrow, but for now, here's a little sneak peak of him just hanging around.

Don't worry ... the little guy was totally safe the whole time. Dad's hands were actually right under him.

Tea Party -- Delaware Kids Photographer

What's the one lesson you NEED to know as a child photographer? Stop trying to predict how things will go! Just stop it. Children—much like adults (well, except me, of course ; ))—are completely unpredictable. Take yesterday, for example. I was just 100% sure that Maliya would show up and in true Maliya fashion not want to associate with the other little girls for about 30 minutes. I wondered if she would even join in the fun of the tea party. But, I knew that at the very least, she would quickly devour a cupcake for the camera. I also knew that Kayla and Emma would come flying in, hop down into their seats and give me a big dose of silly. Well, needless to say, I didn't get anything that I expected. Maliya was raring to go, but not all that interested in her cupcake. And Kayla and Emma were surprisingly subdued ... that is, until the sugar overload kicked in!

The goal of the shoot was nothing more than practice for me. We shot these pictures in my parents' backyard, which usually gets full sun all day. But, since it was a completely cloudy morning with rain supposedly just an hour away, I figured we'd be ok. But literally the second I put the finishing touches on the decor, the bright, bright sun came out ... and stayed out. See. Like I said. You just can't predict anything!

So, on to the photos of this girlie extravaganza. It was shabby chic all the way!

Check out these pink (of course) gorgeous cupcakes from SAS Cupcakes on Main St. Don't you just want to eat that pile of frosting? Yah, me, too. And I did. The whole giant pile. FYI, SAS offers nationwide shipping. And amazingly enough, the cupcakes arrive in absolutely perfect condition. No lie. It's pretty amazing! Check them out.

Here's our little Emma displaying very proper, subdued British manners. She looks lovely in this hat that my Mom found up in Maine.

Maliya's little bear joined in the fun, too. I was happy to see him : ) I gave him to her while she was still in her Mommy's tummy. He's sitting in a cute little vintage doll high chair that my Grandfather gave to me. It belonged to my Mom and her sisters when they were little.

Bella wanted to come, too. Actually, she was the only thing predictable about the day. She managed to find an empty cupcake wrapper and devour it before anyone could stop her. Sigh.

So, after the tea party, the girls did a little crab apple picking. I must say, my parents have THE best yard for pictures! Well, minus the whole full sun thing.

Maliya didn't like them at first (note the face). But then she decided that sour is good and devoured a couple.

And then it was time to burn off the sugar overload.

Bella loved having the little girls pay attention to her. She only closes her eyes like this when she's very, very happy.

Letting Go ... -- Delaware Photographer

Ok, confession time: I'm a total control freak and perfectionist. There. I said it. And no where is this more true than with my professional endeavors. I like everything to be PERFECT. So, when it comes time for me to have my picture taken, I sweat a little. Ok, a lot. And really, it's all about a loss of control. I can't control the angle of the camera. I can't control the light. I can't control the post-processing (aka, zit, wrinkle, and roll removal). Now, if you follow my blog, then you've seen the pictures that I allow my Mom to take. But, if you ask her, she'll tell you that it was no fun working with me. I tell her exactly how I want the shot composed and then I take over with all the post-processing. Like I said, I'm a control freak. Sooooo, it was a real challenge for me to be able to let go and allow a fellow photographer to do her thing. And on Friday, that's what Amie and I did. We photographed each other. And neither of us was all that thrilled about it, I think, in the beginning. But, I have to say, we ended up having a good time : )

But I'm putting the cart before the horse. Before we headed out for our fabulous photo shoot, we hit the backyard with her insanely cute and absolutely NOT camera shy boys. I photographed them in the sprinklers earlier in the summer, so now whenever they see me, they beg their Mom to turn the sprinklers on. As you can see, they won her over this time.

Like I said ... NOT camera shy.

And then we were off! We stopped at two great locations, including a diner where people stared at us like we're crazy. But that's ok ... because the light was awesome!

I am VERY happy to report that when we moved to our second location out on a busy road, we got honked at several times. As you can see here, it was pretty funny ...

Amie rocked it. And I've got tons more, too.

So, as for my feeling all out of control and nervous, Amie did a great job of helping me relax. It's a HUGE job, but she was up for the challenge. I nabbed these shots from her blog ...

Something Better Was Just Around the Corner -- Delaware Wedding Photographer

I had the perfect place all picked out for my "end of summer bride" shoot. The light at the end of the day now is so gorgeous and I just knew that this was THE place. The problem with end-of-summer light, though, is that it moves fast. Super fast. So, when Jess called to say she was running a bit late, I knew that we wouldn't have time to make it to my "perfect" spot. I was disappointed for about a second, but then my brain immediately starting running through closer locations. This is the kind of situation when I love having an ADD brain. It usually doesn't take too long for a new idea to pop into my head. (Now, whether or not I'll remember it is another matter completely!) She arrived, hustled into the dress, and we were off. I live about a mile from Milburn's Orchards, and the evening light there is gorgeous. So, we headed in that direction. First, though, we stopped in the field right next to my development. I've been wanting to do something in these yellow flowers. They're so pretty. There's rumblings that soon the entire area will be yet another giant housing development, so I'm glad we got to work there while it's still there.

So pretty ...

And then we made it to Milburn's. I was 99% sure that someone would come and kick us out ... even though we weren't in anyone's way. But, they didn't. Instead, the sun shone down on us in the most soft, yellow, and perfect way. I brought out an old bicycle that I bought at Goodwill last year for $5.

When I look at these pictures, I can't imagine why I wanted to go anywhere but where we went. It's perfect. I guess that's the beauty of life. Something better is often right around the corner. And in this case, it was ... literally.

This next one isn't even close to being in focus. But there's still something about it that I like.

This is my second test shoot with my new lens ... and I'm lovin' it!

With just about 10 minutes of light left, we drove back to my house. Right across from the yellow field is another area that will soon be yet another depressing housing development (well, depressing to me, anyway). I've been dying to do something like this for a while ...

Poor Jess. The bike that we were carting around took up most of the back of my car, and in order to fit it in, I had to move the front seat up all the way. She had to squeeze into the back with the bike. And Bella's bed. And then I stuck her out in fields with bugs. Lots and lots of bugs. Not to mention the fact that she was wearing a veeeery itchy dress. And all of this at the close of what was already "one of those days" for her. So, a special thanks to my fabulous model. You rocked it! : )

The Giggles -- Delaware Commercial Photographer

Now normally, when a child doesn't know me all that well, he or she tends to be rather shy at first. But it doesn't take long for him or her to realize that I'm basically a giant child. The only difference is that I like to eat vegetables. That's about it. So, even if the little one is a wee bit shy in front of the camera at first, the shyness melts away pretty quickly. And usually after a few minutes of me being silly and saying, "Don't smile. Don't do it. No, no. Stop it!! No smiles!," the lips start to part and my little subject will giggle. And then, the rest, as they say, is history. On Sunday, however, I didn't have to work hard for smiles. This little one showed up with a major case of the giggles. At first I thought Mom was behind me doing silly stuff. But, as it turns out, she didn't need to. Maybe it was the cute dress that got her all excited. Or the glasses. Or the coolest silver clogs I've ever seen! Whatever it was, it was adorable. She just cracked herself up ... and I snapped away : )

How perfect is this wall for her dress?! I actually had to do some hunting around before I found the perfect spot. My usual go-to place for a graffiti has recently been ... sigh ... painted white. I'm sure some new art will surface soon. Don't get me wrong ... as a citizen of this town, I do appreciate the efforts to keep it clean. On the other hand, as an artist, I say ... leave the cool graffiti alone!

Seriously. She giggled her way through the whole session. It made my job very easy.

Leaving On A Jet Plane -- Delaware Glamour Photography

I'm heading towards the big two. That's right! In December, my little photography business will be officially two years old. I can't believe how fast the time has gone by! It seems like just yesterday that I was borrowing the camera from work to "fool around" on the weekends. I had no idea what I was doing, though. I would simply set the camera on the "no flash" setting and let the camera do the deciding for me. I didn't understand camera settings at all, and when someone tried to teach them to me, my visual mind couldn't understand the verbal explanation. But in time, I learned. And in time, I got my very own camera body and lens. And it rocked my world! I left my job and used that one camera body and one lens for well over a year. I couldn't afford to invest in any additional equipment, so instead, I invested in creativity. I studied light, angles, and people. And in time, I came to understand camera settings and how to create amazing imagery manually. And even with my limited equipment, I progressed. And then, just a few months back, I finally did get a second lens! And my how that lens rocks my world! And then, as if that weren't enough, I upgraded my camera body. And that (yes, you guessed it) ROCKED my world. But I'm still not someone to rely on equipment and gear. You will never see me walking around with 20 lenses strapped around my waist ... that's just not my style. I feel like it would distract me from what's really going on and I just might miss an amazing moment.

Anyway, from time to time, I schedule shoots for no reason other than to practice and try out new techniques and to really push myself. Yesterday, a good friend obliged me and was willing to be my victim, er, model. She was all like, "Ok, ok. I'll do your shoot. But only if you get out one of your jets."

Check it out. Isn't my jet nice?

Alright, I don't have any jets. But this particular shoot is such a cool example of creating truly meaningful imagery. My friend works at an airport, LOVES airplanes, and is wearing her Grandmother's wrap. I love when people are able to somehow work in both their passions and memories into our shoot.

Ooooh, I love this next one ...

This next one is my absolute favorite. It's a prime example of how my camera ROCKS my world. The plane was inside the hanger when we shot this and it was completely dark inside. There was a little light coming in the window, of course, but barely anything. I shot this at 6000 ISO. Yes, I said 6,000! The original picture had barely any noise, which is just insanely, crazily amazing. The grain that you see in the picture was actually added by me because I wanted to give it a really, really vintage film look.

On second thought ... this one might be my favorite. Not sure. I love that you can see her Grandmother's name on the lining.

And then, I dragged her up a ladder. She thought I was crazy. But I LOVE these : )

And with a little vintage finish ...

I'm very happy to report that I came up with a brand new service. The idea just popped right into my head while we were shooting in the plane! It's sure to be a BIG hit ; ) It's on-flight corporate head shots. Yes, that's right. This wonderful service would save CEOs precious time by allowing them to make use of their flight hours. In lieu of payment, I will accept a week-long stay in a 4-star hotel. Meals and extra desserts included. The suite must include a princess bed for my assistant, Bella. Please note: This service is only valid on flights going to France, Italy, Australia, Tahiti, Switzerland, and Ireland. Oh, and England, too.

He Made My Heart Swoon -- Delaware Baby Photographer

I love when Moms purchase my first-year picture plans! It's so much fun watching their little one grow and develop. I arrived yesterday afternoon for Hunter's mini-session (that his Mommy won on the blog a little while back ... stay tuned for another give-away coming up in the next few weeks!) and I couldn't help but just smile at the sight of him. He's growing into such a little man! Rachel put him down on the floor and I got down, too so that I could photograph him doing his current favorite thing ... crawling. But as soon as I got down on the floor, he came flying across the room and plopped himself down right next to me. He put his little hand on my leg and looked up at me like, "hi, lady!" And that's when my heart swooned. No doubt he could smell the potato chip crumbles that were still on my dress, and that's why he came to see me. But, I'll just pretend it's because he liked me so much : ) It was so precious that I had to quickly throw my camera at Rachel and she grabbed a picture of us. I love when that happens!

Ok, and now on to just him. He's got THE best eyes. There's only one other person I know with eyes like his, and that's, well, his Mom.

Even Jack joined in on the fun. I think he might even be able to give Bella a run for her money! I didn't know there was another dog who could strike (and hold!) such a fierce pose! Although currently, my poor little Bella is nursing a bad back. She wouldn't even give me kisses last night ... that's how much pain she was in. And if you know Bella, you know that trying to sneak in as many kisses as possible is her greatest passion in life. I'm happy to report she's feeling quite a bit better today : ) But she's forbidden from stairs and modeling shoots for two weeks. Sigh. Maybe I'll have to borrow Jack!

And a few in the buff. I can't decide if I like it better in black and white, or color? Either way, he's too cute!

And I think this last one is my favorite. Actually, I think it's the very last shot of the session, too.

I can't wait until Hunter's fall session! Although, I'm definitely going to have to wear my sneakers if I want to keep up with him. I'll stretch before I come, too ; )

Vintage Baby -- Delaware Child Photographer

Most members of my family share a love for all things vintage, antique, or just plain used. We scour thrift stores, resale shops, antique stores, and flea markets ... especially when we're in Maine. When I was younger, I used to collect cat figurines. Why? I don't know. I just did. And they, in turn, collected a lot of dust. Then as I got older, there was my vintage clothing phase. I think I owned at least 200 polyester dresses at one time (no lie). And now, I'm constantly on the lookout for props. I have an entire room in my house dedicated to my finds. And one of the latest additions to my collections is a lovely little antique doll crib that my Grandfather found for me at a flea market in Maine. He offered to refinish it for me, but I love it just as it is.

Here's Miss Alexandra trying out the crib for the first time. I'm not going to lie. She didn't love it. Although, she liked it more than the hat ; ) ....

We shot these pictures up at the top of Brandywine Park, right at 7:30 when the light usually lays on people like a luxurious blanket of gold. I was so excited when I pulled in to the parking lot. It was beautiful. I walked the crib out to the grass and all of the sudden everything went dark. Sigh. A huge cloud covered up the sun for the rest of the evening. But it didn't matter ... this was still the perfect place for our shoot.

This shoot was a practice session for me. I have a lovely new lens that I'm working with and I wanted to take it out for a spin ; ) And because I like to give my practice sessions a theme, this shoot was "Organic Vintage Baby." I think we made it happen : )

U of D Family -- Delaware Family Photographer

One of the questions I hear the most often is ... where, oh where should we go for our family session?! And usually, I try and let my clients come up with a spot that has some special meaning to them. Some people like to take their kids back to the site where they got married, for example. Others like to stay around the home (after all, it's where the heart is ; )). So, when Christina contacted me about hosting a picture party for her in-laws, I was excited to hear their idea for a location: the beautiful U of D campus. Not only does her father-in-law teach there, but all of the kids in the family went to U of D. I loved the idea! But all summer long they've been ripping apart areas of the campus, so I wasn't sure how well it would work out. Saturday evening arrived, however, and there was no construction. Campus was empty ... and very lovely. I must say, I always feel anxious when I walk through campus. I get flash backs to exams, papers, and a super heavy backpack.

So, here we go. A big ol' hodgepodge of family pictures.

Five sisters ... and one little brother. He's going to grow up soooooo loved : ) ...

This is what it looks like to be a Grandma. Somebody snuggling you. Somebody crying. Somebody pouting. And you're loving it : )

Me and science never really got along. I was your typical English Major who dreaded having to take a science class (with a lab ... eek!) in order to graduate. The class I took had something to do with rocks ... and I got a B. That's really all I remember. So, needless to say, I never set foot in Brown Hall when I was in school. But I did this weekend! This family is full of scientists, so it only made sense to take some pictures in one of the lecture rooms.

We were just in time! The students have already started coming back to town and pretty soon that lovely campus will be over-crowded. I'm so glad that I had a chance to work there this summer. The grounds are beautiful. And it's so peaceful walking around there ... especially when there are no exams looming over your head. Or labs about rocks to attend.

Yes, she found me through my blog. And I'm so glad she did! Little Bryce is as cute as can be and I had a great time working with them.

This blanket was special gift ... so I'm glad we could work it into the shoot.

Bryce is four months old, which is the perfect age for snuggle shots with Mom and Dad. This is the in-between stage for pictures. It's in between the newborn stage where they're all curly and sleepy and will usually lie pretty much anywhere, and the six months stage where they're usually sitting up and happy as can be. But, I happen to love this stage because it's great for getting shots with Mom and Dad.

I absolutely love this little surfer dude outfit!

As a way of thanking all of my current clients for being such fabulous people and supporting my business, I will reopen all portrait galleries and offer prints at a BIG discount off of current prices.

I've been getting lots of questions about the sale. Here are some details that you should know.

Galleries will be available from 7:00 a.m. Thursday morning until 11:00 p.m. Thursday evening.

Orders must be placed through the online gallery, not through me. You will need a credit card to place the order through Smugmug's secure ordering system.

The above-mentioned sizes are the only sizes that will be available during the sale.

The sale will NOT include wedding galleries (since they are priced differently). Also excluded are galleries for which an order has not yet been placed (i.e., if you have yet to order from your gallery, it won't qualify for this sale. I'm sorry. Again, there are no exceptions to this rule.)

The sale will take place for one day only ... Thursday, August 13. There are absolutely no exceptions. None.

The galleries will be open first thing in the morning, and close down at 11:00 p.m. EST.

I am NOT able to alter any images in any way for this sale. I just wouldn't be able to handle the requests. Images must be sold as they are seen in the gallery.

Now ... moving on to some pictures! A few months back, The Delaware Kids' Directory offered a photo contest. The winner would receive a free session and prints ... not to mention a spot on an upcoming cover!! Andrea won!! She sent in such a great picture of her boys. Last week, on one VERY hot and humid afternoon, we met up for her session. There's an expression that perfectly describes the mood of our session ... boys will be boys. They just will. And her boys are cutie pies.

We shot a bunch of them in this tree ... and they're definitely my favorites from the session.

I was desperate to make these guys laugh! So much so that I had to enlist the help of Mom. She pulled out some VERY effective tricks. I'm not gonna say what method she used ... but as you can see in this next shot, it definitely got a reaction! ; )

Like I said, boys will be boys ...

It didn't feel that hot. At least not when I left the house at 9. I felt pretty terrible, though, when Audrey told me that there was an excessive heat warning out for the day. I felt even worse as I pulled out the long-sleeve shirt, knee socks, and boots. It was only 10:00, but man, all of the sudden it was like we were in a steam bath. But Raven was a MEGA trooper. I think she only complained once. That's approximately 13 times less than me. Here she is modeling some fabulous CourtneyCourtney looks.

As soon as I pulled this outfit out of the package, I KNEW Charlie had to be part of this shoot. He just had to.

You GOTTA love those glasses!

Rubber rain boots + excessive heat warning. And you'd never know it by looking at the pictures.

This next image features the look Raven says her Dad would make if he was with us in order to make her laugh.

Next up was an outfit that I dubbed the British Sports Star outfit, or Sporty Spice.

If you ever run out of poses to ask your model to perform, just ask a little girl. She'll have plenty of ideas to offer. And let's face it, she'd rather do her poses than yours.

100% Girl -- Delaware Child Photographer

Last week I had a super, super fun session with three little sisters. Nanna and Mom had picked out adorable outfits and had fabulous ideas. Everything was perfect ... even the incredibly hot weather cooled off right in time for our evening session. I know they must be exploding with anticipation at this point!!! So, we'll get straight to this very pink, purple, and 100% girl preview. And because I made them wait so long, it's a big one : )

We started off upstairs in big sis' Kayla's room. I really want to reach into this picture and pinch each and everyone of those adorable chubby cheeks.

Then we had a little pillow-fighting fun. And amazingly enough, it didn't end in tears as pillow fights so often do.

Next stop ... the garden.

Then it was time for a little strolling down by the creek.

I love the jumping shot! They didn't get very high, but they were excited anyway : )

Aunt Lisa hopped in for a few shots. Oh, that light!

I've decided that I'm going to give up driving in 10 years. And here's why ...

And what better way to end a summer session than with some wet fun.

9 months -- Delaware Baby Photographer

Are you melting? Me, too. I think we got just a little too spoiled in the beginning of summer with week after week of breezy, 70-degree weather. And now that the REAL Delaware summer weather has arrived, I'm just plain old not in the mood for it! Thankfully, I hear that my session tonight will include sprinklers. Phew. I might let the kids run through. Or, I might just stand in the middle of the sprinklers the entire time. We'll see.

And now on to the real point of this post: Miss Alexandra. She's becoming such a big girl ... with lots of teeth, even. Right at this stage, she looks so much like her Daddy that it's crazy!

I love her little almond-shaped eyes ...

And those little tears! Apparently her and Jack actually ARE very good friends ... but he must have caught her off guard here. I still think it's cute though : )

It was suuuuuuper hot when we were outside shooting. An awful lot like today. They were real troopers.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about Alexandra in this first picture that reminds me soooo much of her Mommy.

Isn't their backyard gorgeous?!!!

Oh, these next few. I just love them so much! Colors. Grit. CHICKENS! And a tutu. Sigh.

We shot these right out in front of Bloomsberry Flowers on Delaware Ave. It's such a cool place. For about six years, I worked for a company up on N. Union Street and everyday when I would walk by on my lunch break. My heart would just pitter patter at the sight of the place. So, I was super happy to do some photos out in front of it!

As always, I had such a great time working with you guys, Maggie! I can't wait to come back for her one-year pictures!!

An Apple A Day ... - Delaware Commercial Photographer

Remember that insanely cute little Zozo Baby Bug outfit you saw here on the blog a little while back? Well, here comes some more! Julie makes the most fun, adorable, and sweet outfits. I just love them. And because I let the outfit dictate the shoot, this cool old barn was the perfect spot for this first set.

The barn looked completely deserted. But once we got in there, we found all kinds of friends, including LOTS of birds, ground hogs, and wasps (eek!).

I tried and tried (and tried) to get Julia to do a "yeeeee haw!" for me. But she would just look at me like I have three heads. (Her mom and I are pretty good at it, though!) But finally. Finally. At the very end of our session, she let 'er rip!

And then she twirled. And I only had to ask once.

And now onto outfit number two. You'll have to pardon the vast number of shots here, but I just absolutely fell in love with this outfit! So, I got kind of excited and had to drag out some fun props. Even my Babar the Elephant doll that my Dad brought me back from Paris when I was only about 6 or so made it into the shoot.
